Industry Placements

The BECom and MECom qualifications are strongly linked to real-world businesses through the industry experience papers of each degree. These papers, (entitled Industry Experience 1 and Industry Experience 2 for the BECom, and Professional Field Internship for the MECom), require students to undertake placements (typically of a 12 week duration) in work organisations, thus anchoring academic learning in the context of real-world business situations.

The industry placements provide an opportunity for students, in agreement with the respective host organisations, to undertake tasks and projects that relate to the student’s particular areas of study and which also address the areas of need identified by the organisation. This arrangement serves to ensure that the content students learn in classrooms has a practical application and, simultaneously, organisations also benefit from the technical skills and e-commerce knowledge students bring with them. In enabling students to experience the workplace first-hand, the placements provide students with an opportunity to assess their chosen career paths, make valuable contacts within the industry, and demonstrate their skills to potential employers. Placements can be undertaken in an organisation located in New Zealand or overseas.

Over the years, the organisations in which students have undertaken industry placements have greatly varied and range from large, multi-national corporations to small, local enterprises. Hundreds of organisations, large and small, both in New Zealand and overseas have already hosted students from these courses.
