Case Synopsis

In September 2013, after more than 25 years in the family business, Bernard was sitting on a beach on the island of Hvar, Croatia, at the end of a well-deserved six month sabbatical. Croatia was where his grandfather Marco was born before immigrating to New Zealand.  Being at the ancestral home gave Bernard some time to reflect on the concertina lifecycle of the now third generation business, Pavlovich Coachlines.  The business was established by his grandfather Marco and was primarily focused in the school bus sector; when Marco’s son, Ivan, took over the company began to diversify into bus and coach transport sectors.  Now in its third generation, Bernard’s focus was primarily in city transport.  As he lay on the warm sand, Bernard asked himself where to next?  Should he continue his focus on city routes? What about the other transport sectors?
