Competency Modules

The Waikato Management School currently has three competency modules that students may be required to take as part of their specific qualification regulations. All three modules are free of charge.

To successfully complete the CCM, you must satisfactorily complete multiple-choice online tests in: General knowledge of Waikato Management School computer systems; Information literacy; Microsoft Word; Excel; and Powerpoint.

  • Employment Skills Module (ESM)

The Employment Skills Module includes compulsory attendance at four workshops that cover the topics of planning your career, CV and cover letter writing, interviewing skills and employment rights and obligations. You can sign up online for ESM workshops via MyWeb/Moodle, or ask staff in the Management Student Centre for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to do the modules?

Yes, regardless of your background the modules are a compulsory requirement for your qualification. If you do not complete the required modules for your qualification then you will not graduate.

I am studying at the Tauranga Campus so do I still have to do the modules?

Yes, our Tauranga students are required to take all the modules listed under their qualification requirements. The WCM and CCM are offered online, so students can access these modules anywhere. We offer ESM workshops periodically in Tauranga so you need to check your emails to see when the workshops are being offered.

I am studying a Graduate Diploma: do I still need to do the modules?

Yes, students enrolled in a Graduate Diploma are required to do the WCM in their first semester of study with us.

I am studying part-time, what do I need to do?

You will need to complete the modules; however, in regards to the WCM you have until the end of your first year to complete the module.

What happens it I don't do the modules?

Student who do not completed the WCM in their first semester will have difficulties with their future enrolment and may be required to take a University writing paper (even if it is an additional paper to their qualification).

We do not let our students graduate if they have not completed all the required modules for their qualification.

I have transferred from one qualification to another and the modules were not compulsory under my initial qualification, so do I still need to take the modules?

Yes, you must follow the current regulations for your qualification from the year you first enrol in that new qualification - your initial qualification regulations do not apply if you transfer.

Where can I get help with the modules?

Visit the Management Student Centre and we'll refer you to the most appropriate person. Waikato Management School has a Language and Learning Development department that can support you in getting through the Writing Competency Module (WCM).
