Ongoing support and resources offered to PhD students

The MCOM department has an informal, collegial culture, and Ph.D. students are encouraged to engage actively with MCOM staff, whether or not they are part of their supervisory team. Active engagement in the intellectual life of the department includes attending communication dialogues, presenting work regularly at doctoral dialogues, and supporting the Ph.D. cohort. We find that students who are actively engaged with the department feel supported and valued.

Additionally, the department endeavors to provide support and resources as follows:

  • A shared office, if available (A request is made to WMS by the Department Administrator)
  • Office equipment and supplies, including a computer
  • MCOM PhD student support group, including Doctoral Dialogues
  • The following funding will be made available for doctoral students enrolled in the Department of Management Communication who do not hold a staff Unilink research account:
    • $500 per doctoral student per year for first half of doctorate, to be spent on books, journals, transcribing, conference travel, or other costs related to research and scholarly development. In the second half of the doctorate, this should be spent on conference-related activity.
    • For each conference paper presented, an additional $500 is available to support travel for approved conferences. 
    • These amounts will be reduced for co-authored works. 

Note: This funding assumes that the current research money allocation scheme is retained, and is available on an annual basis as the MCOM budget allows. These funds cannot accrue from year to year. (Dept. Minutes, 30 August 2005) 

Doctoral Dialogues

Communication Competence in the Direct Selling Process: Multiple Case Studies of Malaysian Direct Sellers - Nuredayu Omar

This project will research the phenomenon of communication competence in the direct selling process among Malaysian direct sellers. The goals of the research are to study how direct sellers and their buyers conceptualise communication competence in the context of direct selling, to interpret the impact of culture/ ethnicity upon the direct selling process, to identify direct sellers' communication competence related to effectiveness and successfulness in direct selling, and to develop a model of communication competence on the direct selling process for Malaysian direct sellers. Multiple case studies are designed for this study, and the multiple methods that will be utilised for collecting data are interviews, observations, and a survey.
