Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies

The Waikato Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies (PGDip(MgtSt)) is a prestigious programme renowned for its exceptional theoretical and practical qualities. It is designed to develop the comprehensive skills required for effective management and provides you with a broad range of day-today management knowledge within all the main functional areas of management. It will provide you with a set of key management skills that you can apply to your own business.

The programme is delivered in an interactive environment that draws on participants’ existing business experience and allows you to directly use the new ideas encountered in your learning to existing workplace situations.  You will be exposed to a participatory learning experience that focuses on the integration of theory and practice through practical coursework, case studies and class discussion, which can be immediately applied.

As well as being a valuable programme in its own right, those who complete the PGDip(MgtSt) with a B Grade Point Average have the option to transition to Part Two of the Waikato MBA; a higher-level qualification that emphasises leadership.

Leadership Development

Professional development is an important theme of the Waikato MBA. We give our students the opportunity to grow not only as managers but to develop as leaders too.

You'll be asked to nominate a mentor for the duration of the programme, who will act in a support role. He or she can be a senior manager in your own workplace, or in another organisation.

You'll gain a deeper understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses as a leader through a tailored programme of personal development. This will include evaluations related to emotional intelligence, personality type, team roles and 360-degree feedback.

Complementing this will be a one-on-one leadership clinic with MBA director Dr Colleen Rigby, a qualified psychologist and leadership coach, to discuss your individual development needs and prepare an action plan.

Dr Rigby brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this role. Previously, she was a human resources manager at a Fortune 500 company, a regional director for Ernst & Young leading organisational change management, and has consulted for businesses both locally and internationally.

This programme enables you to take your career to the next level and is ideal for:

Co-curricular workshops through the Postgraduate Diploma 

Our papers are supported by one day workshops which will augment necessary skills and competencies.     

Residency 

This part of the programme is where you assess and reflect on your professional journey, build and strengthen your professional networks, starting with those in your cohort, and formulate your personal development plan for the future. 

Jan Adams

PGDip GRADUATE

Jan Adams is Chief Operating Officer of Health Waikato, the provider arm of the Waikato District Health Board.   Jan is responsible for meeting all Government and board priorities and for its financial and operational performance; looking after 5,300 staff and an annual budget of more than $700million.  

Jan completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies at the Waikato Management School in 2011.

"It has been years since I undertook formal management qualifications in the UK.   Waikato offered me the opportunity to refresh my knowledge while adding some new elements not previously covered. I knew the Management School had an excellent reputation, and being able to study locally was a major attraction to me.
