Dolan Cox - MBM and BMus graduate
Management intern at the George Town Festival in Malaysia
Imagine working in the music industry and travelling all over the world. For many it would be a dream, but for Master of Business and Management graduate Dolan Cox it’s closer to reality.
The Whakatane local has combined his two passions – music and business – and is now interning for the company that organises the famous George Town Festival in Penang, Malaysia (watch his video story above).
Dolan says he never would have had this incredible opportunity without the MBM. “I'm very excited to be able to apply my business and arts knowledge in an international context. Ultimately I plan to relocate to Europe and sink my teeth into the music or events industry in that part of the world."
After completing his music degree in piano performance at Waikato, Dolan decided to do the one-year MBM to develop the business acumen, financial literacy and professional skills needed to open the door to more opportunities.
One of the highlights of the MBM for Dolan was launching a new snack food start-up business at the Hamilton Night Markets for an action learning project, and then pitching the idea to a panel of judges in a ‘Dragon’s Den’-style environment.
Dolan says he would definitely recommend the MBM to others because Waikato is small enough that you get to know your lecturers and fellow students, but big enough that there are plenty of opportunities waiting to be seized.
Razel Blaza - MBM and BSc graduate
Sales and marketing, Johnson & Johnson, Auckland
After working as a lab technician for several years, science graduate Razel Blaza decided she wanted to work more closely with people and experience the commercial side of organisations.
The Waikato Master of Business and Management offered the perfect pathway to her new careeer in sales and marketing.
Razel says the MBM exposed her to a variety of management subjects in depth - such as marketing, strategy and leadership - and gave her practical business skills - all in 12 months.
She enjoyed the group discussions in class, and found that after a while she could confidently talk about business issues from many different perspectives.
This combination of technical know-how and strategic business knowledge gave Razel the edge she needed to stand out from the crowd when she started applying for jobs at the end of her MBM.
Now she's loving her new job as a sales and marketing coordinator at Johnson & Johnson in Auckland, which complements her previous experience of working in the medical and scientific sectors.

I’m always so impressed to see how effortlessly MBM students are able to apply the knowledge and skills they’ve gained to real-world business cases. This proves the degree is not only valuable to the students, but it’s going to add real value to the companies who employ them.
Having stood in the students’ shoes myself years ago, it won’t be long before they’re knocking on the door to stand in the shoes of New Zealand’s top businesspeople.
